Week 4 | Chris

I was really convicted after reading “Why Church”.  A couple of the strongest points I got out of it was to really take the time I spend at church and really concentrating on making the best out of it.  I really took in the part where he was talking about how going to church without practicing communally can really do more harm than not going at all.  We really need to embark on the journey with colleagues and teachers and even family.  And this really just brings back the point of spiritual authority and how you need to find a person that can mentor you and help you get to know God on a whole new level.  On another note, church really brings people together.  It binds them through song and liturgy.  It’s really interesting to think about it.  It really does bring people together.  I mean look at our DT group, none of us would have known each other if not for Ekko Church.

“The Doctrine” I felt was super straight forward and was like a rule book on how to lead or be a member of the church.  It really emphasized being a member not only to have your name down on the member list, but to really love each other and respect one another.  The membership role should be unselfish and really be used to bring God and love to others.  And a member should go to church because they need to recognize that they cannot get close to Christ without the help of others, again authority and submission comes in.

Another point that McLaren made was that to “speak the painful truth about my own darkness in the presence of God and in the presence of my peers is a powerful thing, a transforming thing”.  Wow.  It’s never really been plain out laid in front of me like that.. How confession can really change a person internally in such positive ways.  I guess what I can really take in from this is just to be honest and open about things when I really have the opportunity to.  McLaren tells us that many people only confess after something goes really wrong.  I interpreted this as: You don’t need a tragedy to bring God into your life.
