Week 9 | Homework | Chris

Buck

Watching Buck was really inspiring and at the same time very sad.  I loved how Buck really saw the horses as people.  It's almost like he knew how to communicate with them and read their body language.  I feel like this connects to the reading in that, Buck and his mentor Tom had a real connection together and that he really changed his life for the better.  Before he was put into a foster family, his father really abused him and didn't teach him what he needed to learn to live life to the fullest.  But after he was moved to a foster home and given a job, he had positive role models and influences that would almost in a way keep him accountable.
The movie really stresses that it wasn't the horses' fault that it turned out bad, but it was the fault of the human and the situations that the horse went through.  I strongly believe that this is true in society.  Not everyone has the same amount of opportunity.  There are so many factors that have to be considered and things that many perspectives that we have to try to see to fully understand how a person acts and feels.

Sword Maker

Today many people are deprived of taking up an apprenticeship and working at a trade.  I believe that the education system really has the most influence for this trend.  Watching the sword maker, I really thought of how society has changed and that the health system of apprenticeship has been lost.

Indispensable Relationships You Can't Be Without

Sometime I feel that the people who are trying to help me and change who I am for the better are attacking me and criticizing the way I live.  Reading the passage about the husband who's wife edited his essay, really stood out to me.  I feel that even though that people may appear to first come off as critical, they may have a underlying love that convicts them to criticize.  This really connects to how Buck was with his horses.  He really loved the horses, but he had to direct them and sometimes punish them in order to help them become tamed and get used to being obedient.
By allowing someone to edit and keep yourself accountable, we are giving that person the right to intrude in our lives and give a new perspective on how to live it.  This is really scary for me since I'm a pretty closed off person and I'm not used to sharing my personal life and thoughts with other people (other than DT).  By really letting someone under my skin.
Is God's name clear, or smeared in your life?  This question really sums up what an editor or nathan has to bring up to the subject.  It won't be easy to really analyze and bring up deep issues that someone would need to improve, but the reading suggests that a loving editor will surpass boundaries and tell whole truths.
